Happy Flamingo Friday!
I was thinking today..why not start a new feature about Flamingoes!
Here are some Flamingo facts...
There are 6 types of Flamingo.
Type 1 : American Flamingo
This is the most recognisable flamingo (and the pinkest!) You will recognise it from the plastic lawn flamingoes (this was the bird that inspired those)
It can also be known as the Caribbean Flamingo because..you guessed it...that it where it can be found.
This is the only flamingo that naturally inhabits North America and can be found around the Galapagos Islands and the West Indies.
They prefer areas with lots of salt which is why they are often found in small lakes.
It is not known why they stand on one leg, however it is thought to be to preserve body heat whilst standing in the cold water.
Although they are very good at swimming and flying, they don't do much of either and prefer to stay at the waters edge.
Their life expectancy is up to 40 years.
The saying "you are what you eat" can be used to describe a flamingo as the pinkish colour comes from the nutrients they get from their food. The less nutrients..the paler they become.
